SOUTHEAST ASIA
THE BASICS
In the winter of 2018, after I graduated from college, I set off on what was supposed to be a three-week solo trip to Southeast Asia. Fast forward two months and I finally returned to the U.S. with a newfound sense of self and passion for both travel and independence. This trip to Southeast Asia was probably the paramount inspiration to begin this blog, as it pushed me to discover what I was capable of and showed me the importance of going outside my comfort zone.
When to go
Southeast Asia is undoubtedly best explored during the winter months – I chose to go January through March – to avoid the large crowds, long lines, and unbearable heat.
What to do
- Singapore: Check out the Hawker Stalls, essentially food courts, for fresh, authentic dishes from all over Asia.
- Thailand: Spend a few days getting your scuba certification on one of the many gorgeous islands.
- Myanmar: Ride (or just watch) the hot air balloons during sunrise over the old city of Bagan.
- Laos: Rent motorbikes and explore many of the wondrous waterfalls, including the famous Kuang Si Falls in Luang Prabang.
